Position Purpose & Overview

The Primary Learning Support teacher will assist students with designated Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other mental and physical challenges They will work with instructors to ensure that all students can participate in the educational experience and monitor levels of support required over the school year. The Primary Learning Support Teacher will also develop strategic approaches to the Individual Education Plan to ensure that all students are successful in their educational endeavours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist individual students as outlined in an Individual Education Plan (IEP) following guidance from classroom teachers, specialists, counselors, and learning support teachers.
  • Collaborate with teachers in the planning, development, accommodation, preparation, and implementation of curriculum, classroom materials, and schedules to meet the needs of designated students.
  • Maintain regular communication with the supervising teacher and other team members including parents and other relevant professionals.
  • Observe and record student progress.
  • Maintain detailed written records as required.
  • Supervise students both on and off the school campus as required.
  • Work with students with designated Autism Spectrum Disorder or physical challenges.
  • Support student needs through one-on-one time, small groups, and in the general classroom environment.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • A valid BC Certification of Teaching
  • Experience working with students with designations (ADHD, Autism, Sensory, and Regulation Needs).
  • Experience with documentation in an educational environment.
  • Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent.

Qualities and Skills

  • Awareness of early years learning and diverse needs.
  • Ability to implement behaviour management techniques as well as flexibility in response to student behaviours (e.g. adjusting and adapting strategies).
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of classroom/resource teachers.
  • Strong commitment to student success and happiness.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-Aid training provided by St. John’s School

Position Details

  • Full-time temporary position (January 8 – March 15, 2024)
  • Work location: On site
  • Annual Salary ranges from $66,081 to $113,097 based on the school’s teacher salary grid. Placement on the grid is assigned in accordance with level of education and years of teaching experience. Annual salary is prorated based on length of contract.
