About Saint James School
Founded in 1842, Saint James is a coeducational, Episcopal school that welcomes students of all backgrounds and faiths. Located in central Maryland on a 100-acre campus surrounded by 700 acres of school-owned farm land, Saint James is five miles south of Hagerstown and 70 miles from both Washington, DC and Baltimore.
Saint James is primarily a boarding school with a smaller day student program, and the school prides itself on offering a personalized approach to learning in a diverse and inclusive environment. As a result of the strong tradition of academic excellence, with competitive athletics and a full program in the arts, Saint James School challenges its students to grow academically, athletically, artistically, socially, and morally.
Saint James School takes special care to name the traits of moral and spiritual excellence and to infuse these ancient virtues into the full round of student activities. Recognizing that these good habits build lives that are noble and resilient, we teach the virtues not only in chapel but also through the residential life, athletics, the arts, and the academic curriculum. We stress, in particular, the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love; the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, courage, and temperance; and such other crucial traits as honesty, kindness, humility, patience, generosity, loyalty, and gratitude.
Meet the Headmaster
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Stuart Dunnan is an Episcopal priest who has been the Headmaster of Saint James School since July of 1992.
Father Dunnan graduated from St. Albans School, cum laude, and earned an AB, magna cum laude, and an AM with a major in history from Harvard University. He also earned a BA and a D. Phil. in theology from Oxford University and a Certificate in Anglican Studies from the General Theological Seminary in New York. Before coming to Saint James, he taught history and was a college counselor for two years at Harvard School in Los Angeles, and then later served as chaplain for an additional year. At Oxford, he served on the Chapter of Pusey House, and then as the Chaplain and a junior research fellow in history at Lincoln College.
Since coming to Saint James, Father Dunnan has doubled the size of the student body from 120 to 240, making the school fully coeducational and greatly increasing its racial and demographic diversity. During his 32 years as headmaster, Saint James has expanded and improved its academic, athletic, fine arts, music, drama, and residential programs, and built, purchased, and/or renovated every building on campus, while maintaining its distinctive Anglo-Catholic identity and its more traditional and community-oriented culture. It has also increased its endowment tenfold and purchased an additional 435 acres of surrounding farmland to protect the setting of the school.

Academic Program
Saint James students dig deep, embracing intellectual challenge and stretching themselves in broad exploration of core academic disciplines.
Small classes (typically 10-12 students) ensure engagement and mastery of material. A variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, 19 total, allow interested students to pursue subjects in greater depth. Electives are offered to upper-form students for enrichment and the exploration of new interests.
Saint James supports our students in ways that only a community of this size and character can. Expert teaching, advising, and mentoring help them cultivate the confidence, skills, and habits of mind that lead to success in college—and beyond.
The Academic Support program provides oversight of a student’s academic progress and offers individualized tutoring in study skills, organization, and time management. Specific content area support (e.g., math, language, science) is also provided for some students as needs arise.
Academic Support staff members monitor students’ academic progress. Tutoring support structures are put in place based on a student’s previously documented academic needs as well as academic needs that emerge during the year. First year students with documented academic needs are enrolled in the Academic Support program so they may receive services from the beginning of the school year.
Academic Support requires an enrollment contract addendum for an annual fee of $4,500. Students whose academic needs are identified after the school year has begun will be enrolled in the program and fees will be prorated by semester. Students who return to Saint James after their first year are re-enrolled or released from the program based on recommendations of the Director of Academic Support and the Associate Headmaster.

University placement services & career guidance
The College Counseling Office at Saint James School facilitates a college search and application process that celebrates the talents of our student body, but is also tailored to the needs of every individual.
Our comprehensive programming, bespoke guidance and dynamic research tools empower students to engage directly with the college search process, and in doing so engenders a sense of ownership towards their future.
In its totality, our college counseling philosophy is holistic and seeks to echo the larger school mission to “challenge and inspire our students to be leaders for good in the world.”
International Students
Most first-year international students for whom English is not their primary language are enrolled in the International Student Support (ISS) program. ISS requires an enrollment contract addendum that reflects an annual fee ($9,000). International students who return to Saint James after their first year are re-enrolled or released from the program based on recommendations of the Director of International Student Support.
All international students are fully mainstreamed into English, history, science, and mathematics classes; the primary focus of ISS is academic skills support for these classes. Strategies for efficient text reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary, test-taking, expository writing, and research skills form the basis of the weekly work. This individualized support is not graded, and no academic credit is earned.
