Schools for Gifted Kids

Gifted students often fare much better in private schools, where their needs can be better met.

Gifted students are likely to be bored and under-stimulated in a public school where they are, at times, under appreciated and not always receiving the attention they deserve. In a private school, smaller classrooms and attentive, well trained teachers can make a world of difference to the gifted child. In fact, there are educators who balk at teaching gifted children because these children are bored with ordinary curricula.Rather than being seen as a boon to the classroom these children are seen as a disadvantage by some teachers. This extends to the social sphere, where they may be seen as “nerds” or worse.

SchoolAdvice lists numerous schools for gifted kids with programs for gifted children below. While social inclusion is important, it is also important that your child is able to develop their gifts so that they may fully realize their potential. Having your gifted child in a private school should be part of your long term plan for providing your child with the best education he or she can receive so they may fully explore their giftedness.

Identifying the Young Gifted Child

As a rule many children have extraordinary gifts, but not all children are extraordinarily gifted. Some of the signs that a child may be gifted are:

The ability to learn rapidly.

  • Highly creative.
  • Long attention span/short attention span.  – Tends to focus on tasks of interest to them.
  • Verbal proficiency or frustration. – May talk above the level of others and become frustrated with those that cannot.

Financial aid for gifted children

As with older students, there are scholarships and bursaries available for gifted children in many elementary and secondary private schools. In most cases, these may be offered by the schools themselves, and there may also be aid available from government or private organizations.

There are also numerous private schools in Canada that offer specialized programs well suited for gifted students:
