Faculty Friday at St. Margaret’s School

Kristen Frake, Boarding Activities Coordinator

Every couple of weeks we feature an SMS staff member as a way to showcase the amazing people we have working at SMS. A very special position at our school, and one that plays a pivotal role in the lives of our boarding students are the house parents.

While they spend a lot of time on-campus, not everyone gets the opportunity to meet and learn about what makes them special.

This week’s Faculty Friday is Kelley Harrison, who has been working at St. Margaret’s since 2014. You can find her most weekday afternoons in Pearce House, often making her famous cinnamon buns.

What year did you start working at SMS?

What is your role?

I am a weekday lead house parent.

What is your favourite unit to teach (if you are a teacher)?

The students! I love getting to know them individually in their “home away from home.”I get to see their vulnerabilities and strengths on many levels and create a relationship with them that often extends beyond their time here at SMS. That’s also one of the most difficult parts of my job, saying goodbye to the students at the end of the year that won’t be returning.

What book do you give most as a gift?

Oh The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss.

What other SMS staff member would you most want to be stuck on a deserted island with and why?

Lindsay Kemble, she has a great outdoor background to compliment my skills and she would be a lot of fun as well!

What is your favourite food & local restaurant?

I love to find food from close to home, so restaurants that utilize local ingredients are my favourites.

What is your hobby/obsession?!

Backpacking and hiking. I started backpacking 10 years ago and loved it. I’ve done the Juan de Fuca Trail many times, the West Coast Trail, the Sunshine Coast Trail and many other shorter trips. It’s my happy place!

What is your secret talent or superpower?

Making killer cinnamon buns for my students. That, and being able to spell really well!

What is one thing you can’t live without?

My family.

What’s an interesting fact about you that not many people know?!

That I worked in the youth criminal justice system for 18 years prior to joining SMS.

What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

What habit do you do every day that you feel is integral to the success of your day?

Be physically active. Either going to the gym or walking my dogs, I need to move.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Well, neither really lol! I do tend to wake up around 7:00 am most days, so I guess morning person.

What are you binge-watching right now, if anything?

There are so many good series that my family and I watch together. I love The Righteous Gemstones and Peaky Blinders.

Cat or Dog?

Dog for sure, I have two of them!
