Fraser Valley Elementary is a co-educational, non-denominational private school. We offer an education that fosters academic excellence, good character and leadership skills, an inquiry based curriculum with differentiated teaching, and learning experiences designed to engage each students’ unique learning style.
We believe that a student grows as a person by developing independence, self-discipline, integrity, and a sense of self-worth and this growth occurs when a child feels safe. Fraser Valley Elementary School - Academic Overview
Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate
Fraser Valley Elementary School became an IB School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 2017.
The PYP uses a curriculum framework that hinges on the five essential elements: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes and action. Six transdisciplinary units of inquiries, under six universal and relevant transdisciplinary themes, are developed for each grade. These transdisciplinary units are called the Programme of Inquiry (POI). Each unit in the programme integrates the essential elements into meaningful, challenging and engaging inquires.

Inquiry Based Learning
At the heart of the IB philosophy is inquiry-based learning. Inquiry-based learning is an approach to teaching and learning that places students’ questions, ideas and observations at the centre of the learning experience. It embraces investigation, exploration, questioning, discussion and research. The process often begins with an open-ended question that engages students in problem-solving. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning by developing the inquiry process.
The inquiry-based curriculum incorporates universal, transdisciplinary themes that foster problem solving skills, critical and creative thinking, research skills and the ability to reflect on ones progression as a learner.
Hands-on, inquiry-based mathematics is an integral part of our curriculum, providing a strong foundation to problem solve. Combining inquiry-based practices with the B.C. Ministry curriculum, our students progress at their own level and to develop critical and collaborative mathematical skills.
Language Arts play an integral role in the curriculum, embedded in to our PYP units of inquiry. Emphasis is placed on developing excellence in reading skills through guided reading, novel studies, literature circles and differentiated phonics and spelling programmes. Our students learn to be confident public speakers regularly practicing presentation skills and reflecting on their own practice.
French Language Lessons
French is taught from starting from Kindergarten. There is an emphasis placed on the acquisition of languages to further international communication.
Physical Education at FVES is an important part of the school day. P.E. is taught to each class for 3 hours a week. Students participate in various activities from basketball, volleyball, soccer, and badminton, to hockey, dance, yoga and athletics. We promote the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle, and believe that it enables our students to focus more effectively with their studies in the classroom.
At FVES, we put importance on students having an arts education. Our school provides a platform for creativity and individuality. We regularly have concerts, recitals, performances and assemblies that highlight the talents and artistic skills of our students. We have a music specialists and a visual arts specialists that lend their expertise to creating a robust and dynamic arts curriculum.
