West Island College International – Class Afloat is a private school based in Nova Scotia that operates on a Class-A tall ship. We offer full grade 11 and grade 12 high school curriculums on board while sailing around the world to over 15 ports of call. At Class Afloat our goal is to utilize sail training tradition to explore and build a strong sense of community. With Kurt Hahn’s principles of experiential learning as a foundation, Class Afloat students develop their confidence, compassion, and awareness to graduate as global citizens for the 21st century. At present, there are 48 students on board, and over 20 professional crew/ faculty.

Class Afloat is currently seeking qualified faculty to teach one or a combination of the following

subject disciplines for the 2023-24 Academic Year.

  • Chemistry
  • Human Biology
  • Ocean Sciences/Marine Biology
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Psychology

You will join the program on-land in Berlin, Germany in September of 2023 for a week long immersive faculty orientation. After welcoming students, and undertaking classes and travel in two locations (Berlin, Germany and Heino, Netherlands), you and the Class Afloat crew will board our floating campus, the Alexander von Humbolt II mid-October. The itinerary includes stops in Western Europe, Northern and Western Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and Northern Europe. Daily stipend, flights, health coverage, gear issue, accommodation, and food are all included. All students, crew, and faculty members must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and Yellow Fever.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Education from a recognized postsecondary institution.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Educational qualifications in secondary teachable subjects are required

  • A passion and motivation to teach and guide young people in an experiential educational setting
  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
