Position Overview:

The Prep School at UCC is inviting applications for a dynamic and adaptable Science and Design Teaching Assistant. The UCC TA program is a wonderful opportunity for new teachers to develop experience in the classroom, be mentored by outstanding seasoned faculty members, and have phenomenal exposure to a top quality educational experience. The successful candidate will provide classroom and animal care support to principally a grade 6 and 7 experientially based science and design program. S/he will also provide supply coverage to Prep Science and Design teachers, and also resources and expertise to Primary teachers to enhance their programs. A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teachers and students is essential, as is a willingness to participate in the full co-curricular program of the school, including coaching.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance of science equipment, science storage room and care of laboratory animals (fish, snakes and lizards);
  • Maintenance of the design labs and equipment, including MBots, Arduino, woodworking tools and laser cutter;
  • Assist with the delivery of lessons, supervision of students, as well as set up and take down of laboratory equipment in Grades 3-7;
  • Assist with the delivery of lessons and supervision of students in the design labs;
  • Supervision and coordination of student volunteers and the care of the laboratory animals;
  • Coordinate and supervise students involved in our Prep’s Green Clubs (students who display an interest in environmental action);
  • Occasional supply coverage for Science and Design Department faculty.

Key Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Bachelor of Science;
  • Bachelor of Education an asset;
  • Experience working with Grade 6/7 boys an asset;
  • Experience with the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Program an asset;
  • Demonstrates a passion for science and the ability to instill passion in students;
  • Understanding of and commitment to boys;
  • Ability to recognize individual learning styles and the characteristics of learners;
  • Experience with digital media (Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator) an asset;
  • Experience with Arduino and MBots an asset;
  • Experience with woodworking tools such as drills, drill-press, scroll saw, oscillating sanders and laser cutters an asset;

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and implements course objectives, lesson plans, outlines and assessment pieces for course of study following ministry curriculum guidelines, and delivers programme;
  • Employs best practices for teaching boys at the Intermediate Division level (grade 8 and 9), including scaffolding, book-ending, frequent review and feedback, and differentiated instruction;
  • Employs classroom management practices including establishing and enforcing student expectations, with basic disciplinary strategies for the creation of an effective teaching and learning environment;
  • Communicates regularly on student progress with faculty, administrators and parents;
  • Uses technology in the classroom to enhance learning and support student organization and planning;
  • Creates and administers relevant exams to evaluate students’ progress, records results, and issues reports on progress;
  • Keeps up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and strategies and makes relevant changes to instructional plans and activities;
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, assemblies and various professional development opportunities.

Advising, if applicable, would require:

Being an effective link between the school and parents on both academic and non-academic matters by carrying out the duties of an Adviser.

  • Meeting with advisees during twice weekly advising sessions and delivering the advising curriculum;
  • Writing advising comments on reports and communicate formally and informally with parents of advisees in person, e-mail and via telephone;
  • Provide direction and support for advisees.

Co-curricular Responsibilities:

  • Leads identified activities in our vast co-curricular program (including athletics, the arts, clubs and publications) with skill, passion and enthusiasm.

Key Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Ontario Teacher Qualifications in English and/or Theatre equivalent experience;
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of intermediate or high school English literature and/or drama teaching experience;
  • University Major in English Literature an asset (MA a preference);
  • Understanding of MYP and/or IB Theatre an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching drama at the secondary level;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach drama and facilitate school wide drama productions;
  • Collaborative, energetic teacher with demonstrated creativity and passion for teaching;

Key Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Bachelor of Education required;
  • 1-5 years of teaching experience preferred;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Mathematics as demonstrated by having a Masters in Mathematics or related field;
  • Preferred experience with the International Baccalaureate program;
  • Demonstrated ability to employ a wide variety of teaching techniques including utilization of technology;

  • Monitor Design department inventory of equipment and materials and order, receive and restock as necessary. Provide necessary paperwork to Accounts Payable;
  • Keep work areas clean, neat and organized;
  • Keep abreast of current developments with regards to upgrading tools and equipment;
  • Support the use of technology in the classroom, including improving personal proficiency to do so through professional development, as program changes are implemented;
  • Support planning and implementation of new curriculum through research, space utilization and purchasing;
  • Promote a safe learning and work environment.

Key Experience and Competencies:

  • Related university degree preferred;
  • Bachelor of Education an asset;
  • Experience working with a variety of design lab equipment including 3D printers and laser cutters;
  • Strong technology and research skills;
  • High attention to detail and safety requirements in the lab;
  • Teaching experience would be an asset;
