KeyAdmissions – Our Founding
For each of KEY’s co-founders, a strong educational foundation set us on the right path. A private school education helped prepare us to study at some of the world’s top universities and equip us with the skills to advance in the workplace to ultimately helping us build happy, successful, and productive lives. Our passions are to share these lessons with others, to serve as positive role models, and to provide our students with lifelong educational foundations and preparation.
A Comprehensive Experience
From observing the evolving needs of our students, our company’s focus expanded from admission strategy – counseling students on choosing and applying to the right-fit private schools and universities – to providing students with the fundamental skills required for success. An acceptance letter is not nearly enough; a pathway to success at that institution and beyond is the approach that is necessary to ensure future success. As we began working with more students, we saw that the earlier students establish a strong foundation, the better equipped they would be to learn new concepts and scaffold those to existing ones.
After graduating from UBC, Ben moved back to the United States to work in finance and real estate in San Francisco. He returned to Vancouver to join a commercial finance brokerage, which was acquired by a large Canadian pension fund, and soon thereafter by the Royal Bank of Canada, making it one of the largest leasing companies in Canada.
While he was consistently recognized as a top national contributor, he was looking for another outlet that spoke to his passions. Being an advocate for the educational advancement, Ben co-founded an admissions strategy firm in 2009 alongside fellow St. George’s graduate Ali Nathoo. He found that helping people achieve their dreams was deeply satisfying, and it drove him to spread KEY’s message to a wider audience. Merging with a like-minded admissions strategy firm in 2011, he is committed to thought leadership in admissions strategy and building legacies through sound advice.

“We came to Michael Hayes with a late and urgent need for the best school placement for our son. He knew the most appropriate schools and had personal contacts at those schools at his fingertips. He moved very quickly and obtained us three interviews rapidly, at a time when schools were full and already in session. Michael’s guidance and intercession were beyond valuable and worth every penny to us.”
“This was an invaluable service to our family. Our children are in excellent schools and comfortably settled into our new home. I highly recommend SchoolAdvice to anyone considering sending their children to private schools in Canada.”

“SchoolAdvice is one of the best consultancies for student development that we ever worked with. The service is flawless and Michael Hayes is a very personable professional. “We are new to the area and needed help deciding on an elementary school. I emailed School Advice on Saturday and by Sunday afternoon Michael had scheduled a phone call with me for the following week. His advice was helpful and his knowledge thorough. When we need to make our next school transition I will definitely contact him again.”
